RAIN
I opened my eyes
And looked up at the rain,
And it dripped in my head
And flowed into my brain,
And all that I hear as I lie in my bed
Is the slishity-slosh of the rain in my head.
I step very softly,
I walk very slow,
I can't do a handstand--
I might overflow,
So pardon the wild crazy thing I just said--
I'm just not the same since there's rain in my head.

How is weather used in the poem?
How does the poets knowledge of weather enhance the poem?
What type of weather is discussed?
Would the poem be the same without the mention of weather?
What literary techniques are used in the poem in regards to weather?
Does this poem further your knowledge about weather?
In the poem "Rain", Shel Silverstein uses weather to describe how he feels. In this absurd poem, Silverstein says that rain got into his head. After that, he says, he never feels the same. Shel Silverstein's knowledge of weather enhances the poem because he uses weather in a new way. Most poets use weather to describe their emotions, how sad they feel or how happy they are. Rain usually signifies a dismal mood or a lugubrious mood. However, in this poem, the sounds and movements of rain are described.
Without weather, this poem would not exist. Rain is the main topic of this poem. Shel Silverstein says that rain got into his head and now he cannot do much because there is rain inside of him. If rain were not mentioned, then this poem would be pointless. But, to make a point in this poem, different literacy techniques are used. Imagery is used to describe the rain in the poem. Sounds, actions, and sights are used. This poem furthers my knowledge of weather because I know what to expect when it rains. I can expect to hear the "slishity-slosh" of it, or I should expect to feel it drip down my face.
Weather is a very good topic to write poems on because it represents many different moods. Bringing a twist while using weather as a topic is a very good technique to attract readers. Shel Silverstein did not use the cliche mood when using rain in his poem, and many people enjoyed reading this poem.
